The Good: The movie is like a 2k version of the 1983 weird-media-twists-my-reality-film Videodrome. The only thing I’d change is casting a 2k diva in this movie to replace Debra Harry (Blondie) from the first movie. There was something very unsettling in Videodrome, kind of a "movie within life" kind of a thing with Debra acting.

There are some pretty nasty-looking parts in the movie which did a nice job of setting the mood and reminded me a great deal of Naked Lunch. I like Jennifer Jason Leigh in pretty much everything she’s done, and Jude Law does a nice job in this film as the one guy we identify with in trying to figure out what’s going on.

I really like Cronenberg as a director. Everything I’ve seen I’ve liked, which includes Naked Lunch and Videodrome, so I think you can see where I’m headed next.

The Bad: I think I like Videodrome and/or Naked Lunch more. Those two were very distinct from each other even though they were both about how reality can become (or is) warped. eXistenz just seemed to be a blending of the two movies with the plot vehicle of video games instead or drugs or TV.

Unless Cronenberg is becoming preachy about this whole reality business and wanted to update the message for younger audiences, he should have let this one go.

The Bottom Line: An entertaining film with a gun that shoots teeth.

My Rating: 3 cocktails if you’ve never heard of Videodrome or Naked Lunch.
