I liked the making of featurette because it gave you a taste of what the director was trying to do. The insights into the cast members and how they were interpreting the characters helped me like this movie more. For the true fan of the books maybe the extras make you love them more. For me its just to much extra stuff about a bad movie. Plot: Since this movie is based on a book most people who pick it up have some idea what this book is about. For those of you who don’t I am sorry. My short version of the story is simply this… the world is destroyed and one of the few earthlings still alive is hitchhiking across the galaxy with an odd group of aliens (all of which look human to me) looking for the meaning of life… 42. The Good: I like how this movie looked. The visuals captured the vib of the book really well. Things in movies always look different than when you visualized them as you read the book. Where the art director succeeded was none of his images clashed with the imagery of the book. The voice over really helped hold this disaster together. It was the back story for all of what was going on and explained or set up most of the comic bits from the book. The fact that it was needed is problematic but without it this movie is a total disaster. The Bad: I am dropping in a philosophical disclaimer on this movie. I have read (and enjoyed) the books but I do not feel that the movies have to follow the books to the letter. Concessions must be made when you are making a movie and I am very comfortable with that. I am not hating on this movie as a book purist nut-ball. This movie sucks on its own merits. I loved the books and feel that Adams was a genius for his style of writing. No one goes on an odd tangent better than Douglas Adams. Unfortunately when you try to bring this whimsical stream of tangents to the big screen it becomes a muttled mess. The very strengths of the books cause this movie to collapse under its own weight. If you walked into this movie with out being a Douglas Adams fan then you are shit out of luck. To those who haven’t read the books way to much of this movie will be lost on you. My last totally tangential criticism is that there seemed to be way to much mumbling in this movie. Accents are grand and they add flavor to a film but some of these actors/ aliens mumbled through the entire movie. Bottom Line: Its like Vogan poetry… and that’s a problem.
