Review: Trekkies

Dir: Roger Nygard

Cast: A bunch of freaks

Category: Indie

Reviewed By: Clay

Plot: This film is a documentary about Trekkies. Denise Crosby is the narrator and host for the 86 minute freak fest. The film splits its time between interviews with Trekkies and cast members of the show.

DVD Special Features: Close Captioned, Theatrical Trailers. VHS just as good.

The Good: You can’t watch Trekkies and not be oddly fascinated. The footage at the conventions is entertaining. If you have never been involved in Science Fiction conventions it gives you a window into an unknown world.

Speaking of unknown worlds, the sex segments were classic. Geeks talking about the world of Spock/Kirk homo-erotic literature is just too much. I had to stop the tape I was laughing so hard. If gay love and Mr. Spock get you off there is not enough therapy in the world for you.

I really enjoyed the cast members telling their favorite fan anecdotes. Each cast member seemed to be moved by his experiences in the land of the Trekkies.

The Bad: The most difficult aspect of this movie is that you don’t know whether to laugh at the Trekkies or cry for them. Some of the people featured are truly disturbed individuals and it’s sad to listen to them discuss their obsession.

The director seems to be split between whether he wants to mock the Trekkies or highlight them in a positive light. Instead of picking a perspective and sticking to it Nygard jumps back and forth, mocking the Trekkies in one segment and then highlighting their civic contributions the next.

Bottom Line: Oddly compelling. If you like documentaries rent it. If you like Kirk/Spock erotica buy it.
