Counterpoint: Crumb

Reviewer: Lorelei

The Good: As Frank said, this is an incredible film. All I disagree with him on is his bottom line (so to speak). I don’t believe you have to be a Crumb fan, or even familiar with his work, to find this film amazing. All you need is a curiosity about human nature, particularly in its more twisted and abnormal forms. I also don’t believe you have to like Crumb’s variety of misogynistic satire to enjoy the flick. In fact, I don’t think the filmmakers are trying to promote Crumb’s vision at all. It is simply exhibited as part of the man’s extreme pathology. This is absolutely fascinating stuff. I’d be surprised if it weren’t required viewing for the FBI’s abnormal psych department.

The Bad: This movie is pretty damned depressing. Crumb’s childhood was a car wreck. Don’t watch if you’re feeling suicidal.

Bottom Line: This is a stunning movie. Don’t miss it. I’d give it five shots of single-malt!
