Review: Stir of Echoes

Dir: David Koepp

Cast: Kevin Bacon, Maggie Witzky

Category: Horror

Reviewed by: Clay

Plot: Kevin Bacon is hypnotized and has his mind opened to the world. Unfortunately that means having visions and developing rather random ESP. The visions send him down a path of self-destructive behavior that eventually leads into a murder mystery/thriller.

DVD Special Features: Closed Caption, Widescreen, Dolby sound, Theatrical Trailer, Commentary by Writer & Director, Music Video, "Making of" Featurette, Behind the scene featurette. This disk is packed full of extras. "Making of" featurette is weak as is the behind the scenes segment.

The Good: Kevin Bacon does a great job with his character. He is a likable, hardworking, blue-collar guy whose world gets all fucked up. His performance is very believable. The rest of the cast supports him well.

This movie is creepy and keeps you guessing. I think the writer and director did good work on this film. The plot does not go over the top and works well. I got sucked into this movie and enjoyed it.

The Bad: If I were the director of this movie I would jump off a bridge or shot the director of Sixth Sense. This film was doomed by the success of Sixth Sense. While they are about similar topics, they are not the same movie. Had the Sixth Sense not been released this film would have done very well. What a kick in the balls to have a blockbuster with similar content to be released in the same season as your movie…. Mr. Keopp, the Filmdudes express our condolences.

The end has a weak part in it. I would write a paragraph or two on this but it would spoil the end of the movie in a minor way. Just know there is a little cliché action in the final scene.

Bottom Line: I hate to say it but if you liked Sixth Sense you will love this one.
