Review: Ravenous

Dir: Adam Fields

Cast: Guy Pearce, Robert Carlyle, Jeffrey Jones

Theatrical Release Date: 1999

Category: Horror/Dark Comedy

Reviewer: Lorelei

Plot: A disgraced and traumatized Spanish-American war veteran is sent to a remote army post in the Sierra Nevadas. When a stranger shows up with a horrible tale of cannibalism, the snow hits the fan.

DVD Special Features: Widescreen, Interactive Menus, Scene Selection, Original Theatrical Trailer, Dolby, English and Spanish subtitles, 3 Commentary Tracks, Deleted Scenes, TV Spots, Photo Gallery, Costume and Set Designs

The Good: No matter what you were expecting, this movie will surprise you. Despite its miserable publicity campaign, it is one of the most original and entertaining journeys into the dark side of the survival instinct you will ever see. Stomach wrenching one moment, weirdly hilarious the next, it' s quite the roller coaster ride.

You couldn' t ask for a better cast. Guy Pearce is every bit as subtle and passionate in this role as he was in "L.A. Confidential." Robert Carlyle is simply astonishing. His gleeful, wicked, over-the-top performance is a delight to watch. Jeffrey Jones is wonderful, as always. David Arquette is tremendously funny as a substance-friendly private.

Fine direction and a terrific (if unusual) soundtrack enhance this tale of temptation and horror. The Lestat/Louis relationship between Robert Carlyle and Guy Pearce is a total hoot. Confused? That' s because "Ravenous" is indescribable. Go watch it.

The Bad: "Ravenous" is not for the fainthearted. The scenes of gore are few, but some are very intense and realistic. And don' t expect a happy ending, K?

Bottom Line: Don' t miss this flick. It' s a rare gem, an intelligent, madly entertaining horror movie.

Rating: Five big cocktails (Bloody Marys, please)
