Review: Blade

Dir: Stephen Norrington

Cast: Wesley Snipes, Kris Kristofferson, N’Bushe Wright

Category: Horror

Reviewed By: Frank

Plot: A half human vampire hunter has to stop a vampire bent on the destruction of the world (by bringing back the Blood God). In between he has to save Dr. Karen Jenson (N’Bushe Wright) from the fate of the damned.

Initially Blade seems like a super powerful character. His mother was bit and killed by vampire while she was pregnant with Blade. Then we begin to see that he has some weaknesses. He is struggling to retain his humanity with a serum that he is steadily growing immune to. Then there’s Dr. Jenson. Not just a sexy love interest, in fact Blade might be too tough for that, but turns out she’s a research scientist and might hold the key to Blade’s blood serum problem! Finally, Kris Kristopherson might seem like a bad ass but we all know he’s old and suffers from a bum leg.

The real fun starts when it is determined that Blade’s blood is needed to bring the Blood God to our world and they need to catch him alive.

The Good: Blade is a great comic book character and a pretty good job was done of bringing him to the movie screen. A very stylish movie but more neo gothic. Sort of like the vampires on that Ray Bans commercial. Pretty swell action scenes. Some James Bond type vampire hunting gadgets are at the B-man’s disposal as well.

The Bad: There’s a well known fact that the best writers of our time don’t write comic books. This movie was based on a comic book., that pretty much tells the story right there.

Vampires can’t go out in the sunlight. Less than creative writers in their attempt to throw us a curve asked themselves, "so what if you used sunblock?" There’s a reason no one has used this gimmick. Because you can’t put sunblock on your eyeballs and inside your mouth! There’s a few of these things in the movie. Some scenes seemed to be included just because they were "cool ideas" but did nothing to contribute to the actual story.

The ending, while action packed, sort of left me thinking there was supposed to be more or something different. Let’s just say the Blood God wasn’t that big of a threat.

The Bottom Line: An almost original vampire movie. If you read the comic book you’ll like it.

My Rating: 2 Cocktails.
