Review: Shogun Assassin

Dir: Kenji Misumi

Cast: Tomisaburo Wakayama

Category: Hong Kong Action

Reviewed By: Clay

Plot: A classic tale of revenge. The Shogun in a fit of paranoia turns upon his most honorable Samurai. The Samurai’s wife is killed and he is forced to feel with his son.

DVD Special Features: None. Just finding this movie is tough. Look on Ebay and they are available.

The Good: This movie is the mother of all Samurai films. Never has so much blood sprayed in so many directions. I am talking hundreds killed and buckets of blood flying.

Every thing that this genre has to offer is in Shogun Assassin. A crazy voice over narrative by the son. Ninjas with wild super powers and awesome disguises. James Bond style special equipment (the sons shopping cart is a treasure-trove of killer technology).

Tomisaburo is unbelievable in this movie. There is a really disturbing group nudity scene with his son and a hooker but you really have to see it to get the true vibe.

The fact that this movie was mentioned by name in Kill Bill 2 is not an accident. You will see the influences after watching this movie. It will change your tastes in sword movies forever.

The Bad: It is hard to find and often the quality of the print is suspect. That is all the bad I can say about this movie.

Bottom Line: Buy this movie
