This holiday season the geeks have risen up and flexed their financial muscles. Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings are the big dogs this holiday. The best part is that theses movies are both extremely well done. Finally we are seeing the true economic power of the dork’s at the box office. We have seen the teen dollar warp the box office for years. There is no doubt that the dork factor will have a huge ripple in the upcoming years. What dork opuses are looming on the horizon? How about Terminator 3? It has the highest start up budget of any movie in history. It blows me away that they are going to pay the geriatric Arnold 30 million dollars to revisit the Terminator series. All sci-fi fans have their fingers crossed that this film will rock and breathe some new life in to the dormant sci-fi industry. On the topic of sci-fi giants. Attack of the Clones appears to be geared toward a slightly more adult audience. With all the character introductions done in Phantom Menace, it appears that Attack of the Clones can actually tell a decent story. The special effects have finally enabled the telling of some great stories. Here I feel is the keys to the upcoming geek invasion. The special effects are being used for to enhance and tell the story. The effects are not the story or the point of the movie but rather directors are using them as a tool to tell the epic tales. Harry Potter has tons of special effects through out the film but many of them are subtle. The subtle effects are used to set the tone of the movie and enhance the story. Let’s get over the effects and get back to the story. With the successes of new dork wave will come the pretenders. Get ready for Beast Master II or Red Sonya II. We are guaranteed to get some classic trash thrown up on the screen and isn’t that what DVD rentals are all about. |
