Review: The Limey

Dir: Steven Soderbergh (Line of Sight)

Cast: Terrance Stamp, Peter Fonda

Category: Crime

Reviewed By: Clay

Plot: A British ex-con comes to America to avenge his daughter’s death.

DVD Special Features: Wide Screen, Dolby sound, Theatrical Trailer, Music Video, Director Commentary, Interviews with Terrance Stamp & Peter Fonda. Lots of extras but the film was so weak I really didn’t care.

The Good: This film has a lot of style. For some this is going to be great. More on that later.

Terrance brings a great level of intensity. His performance is all that keeps this movie from slipping off the deep end. Terrance has a great old bad ass thing going but I would like to get to know his character better.

The Bad: This film has a lot of style. In my opinion it has way too much style. The rapid cuts were distracting and did not add anything to this movie. The flashbacks could have been powerful but they were choppy and inconsistent.

The sad thing is, I loved some of Soderbergh’s earlier works. Sex Lies and Videotape is a classic but he showed none of that brilliance in this one. It felt like an art student got loose with his teacher’s camera.

I liked the idea of two 60’s icon’s return to the screen together. Unfortunately the script was too weak to really bring both Terrance’s and Fonda’s talents to the forefront.

For a pseudo-action film, the Limey moved very slowly. The few violent scenes were not very well done and had little impact.

Bottom Line: You could do worse. If the Limey is all that’s at the video store rent it.

Rating: One weak cocktail.
