Review: Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas

Dir: Terry Gilliam (Brazil)

Cast: Johnny Dep, Beniciio Del Toro (Usual Suspects)

Category: Comedy

Reviewed By: Clay

Plot: This movie is based upon the classic gonzo journalism book by Hunter S. Thompson. This film details Hunter S. Thompson's quest for the American Dream. Drugs, liquor, a Somoan lawyer and ton of star cameo appearances flesh this film out.

DVD Special Features: Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound, Theatrical Trailer, Close Captioned, Spot light on the making of Fear and Loathing, deleted Scenes. I really enjoyed the spotlight sequence on the DVD. You hear where Terry Gilliam was going with this project and why Johnny mumbles throughout out the whole film. Deleted scenes added nothing but on a whole features very worthwhile.

The Good: Ever wanted to know what doing mescaline was like. Sit back and enjoy the trip. Terry Gilliam brings drugs to film (or so I am told). There is more to this movie than drugs but the hallucination scenes will definitely stand out in your mind.

I loved the book and I like the movie. Johnny Depp did a great job being Hunter S. Thompson. I would never of pictured Benniciio as a Somoan but he bloated up rather nicely and was great as Hunters attorney.

This picture has a great feel to it. You feel half crazy just watching it. I started guzzling rum about have way through it as a matter of self-defense. Stay half sober other wise you will miss some bizarre cameos.

The Bad: Terry did a great job of transforming the book into a movie. This movie is accurate to a fault. Seeing the weirdness of Hunter S. Thompson on screen will be too much for some viewers. I have no doubt that Johnny Depp did a great Hunter impression but damn if the man doesn’t mumble a hell of a lot.

Remember friends its never easy to understand someone else’s drug trip. This movie is one giant drug binge. At times this movie made me feel like the sober guy at a Grateful Dead concert.

Don’t see this movie on mind altering drugs it might kill you.

Bottom Line: If you like the Doctor this is a must see. If not give it a look you need the culture.
