Review: Drowning Mona

Dir: Nick Gomez

Cast: Bette Midler, Danny DeVito, Neve Campbell

Category: Comedy

Reviewed By: Clay

Plot: When small town bitch (Midler) gets murdered, everyone is a suspect.

DVD Special Features: Color, Closed-captioned, Widescreen, Dolby, Commentary by director, Theatrical trailer(s), Deleted scenes with director's commentary, Widescreen anamorphic format. The deleted scenes show you where the film was headed before the director bailed out. I may not agree with where the film was going, but it at least embraced the dark nature of this story.

The Good: As much as I hate to say it I thought Bette Midler did a great job. She was the turbo bitch that everyone has met at least once and willed a terrible death upon. You could not have asked more from her.

This movie is cameo city. I don’t know why all this talent wanted to be involved in the nightmare but the cast is great.

The Bad: This film wanted to be a dark comedy ala Very Bad Things. Unfortuanatly it didn’t have the balls to go for it. When you watch the deleted scenes you will see a very dark pedophile story line that is started in the movie, but you have no idea what its about until you watch the deleted scenes.

This film really pisses me off because the director had a very dark comedy vibe going, but it appears that the marketing department wanted something else and in post production it was turned into this half ass piece of crap we ended up with. It appears every actor did what he or she was supposed to, but the nutless studio bailed out on the project at the last minute. This is all groundless speculation on my part, so don’t file the lawsuit just yet. Watch the film and tell me I am wrong.

Bottom Line: Great cast….Sold out by a gutless director.

Rating: Two Box –o- wine.
