Plot: In this Western Jackie plays a dedicated servant of the Chinese Emperor. He is sent to America to find rescue the kidnapped Chinese princess Lucy Liu.DVD Special Features: Color, Widescreen, Dolby, Commentary by Jackie Chan, Owen Wilson, Tom Dey, Music Video, Production Stills, Deleted Footage, 3 "Making Of' s": "Making an Eastern Western," "The Shanghai Kid," "Western Stunts, Eastern Style", Full-screen and widescreen anamorphic formats. There is more stuff on this DVD than you will want to watch. The person who watches all of the commentary on this film will undoubtedly be a serial killer of some sort. The "making of" pieces are good, but really for a film this average I found a hard time getting pumped up for it. The Good: If you are a Jackie Chan fan this is his best new film in years. It. s not a re-release or a redubbing of an old film this is actually a new movie. Recently Jackie' s films have either been retreads or lacking in Kung Fu. This one finally gets back on track. The director of this movie remembered that Chan makes Kung Fu films first and that the comedy is there to flesh out the movie. You get lots of Kung Fu, a variety of different weapons and other fun stuff. Owen Wilson is great as Chan' s sidekick. His deadpan delivery is great. Wilson is so laid back he is a great foil for Chan. s bad acting. The Bad: This film is ass deep in old western racism. If I were more Indian I would ride my painted pony out to L.A. and scalp me a paleface. I shit you not when I say that the Indians in this movie actually held up their hands and said "How" to each other. All we needed was some good fire water gags and this baby would be ready to go.This is a Jackie Chan film. I find people either dig him or they don' t. Make your decision on those lines and you won' t be disappointed. Bottom Line: Best recent Jackie Chan film& . Rent it if you like him.Rating: Two Cocktails. |
