Plot: In an effort to feed himself and his friends, a landless squire
masquerades as knight and does battle in a joust. Of course he finds
success and love as he continues to live the life of a knight. It’s an age
old story with few new twists. DVD Special Features: The featurettes do a good job of explaining why the director did the
nutty things he did. The talks with director, art director and producer
all make it clear this movie was made this way on purpose. Normally when a
movie sucks this bad you don’t get all the admissions of guilt on tape.
Grant you, they don’t say the movie sucks, but they do own up to the
philosphy that killed it (more on that later). The Good: This movie has a really good Queen song in the early part of
the flick. Yes, that’s the extent of the good things. Actually that’s not
true--there is also a good David Bowie song in the middle of the movie.
The Bad: To start with I do not hate the rock music/medireview combo.
The first scene that they do this in has a nice bit of style to it.
Unfortunately, they are very inconsistent with the language and music. One
minute they are calling each other "dude," and the next it’s all about My
Lord and My Lady. The random changes drove me crazy. The art design and the costumes were terrible. I know the art director
wanted to keep it young and sexy, but the costumes are really bland and
underdone. The love interest dresses like Catherine Hepburn for most of
the movie and it just doesn’t work. It should be noted for the record that jousting is really boring to
watch. After five or six matches you wish someone would get impaled or
decapitated, anything. Bad violence, no nudity, this was not the
medireview times I know and love. Bottom Line: This movie tastes of King Arther ass. Rating: Four boxes of wine. |
