Review: Castaway

Cast: Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt

Director: Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump)

Reviewed By: Clay

Plot: Tom Hanks is a time-obsessed Federal Express executive who end up stranded on a desert island. The majority of the movie is Tom Hanks and his efforts to survive on the island.

DVD Special Features: Color, Closed-captioned, DTS Surround Sound, Widescreen, Commentary by director Robert Zemeckis & Crew, Theatrical trailer(s), The Charlie Rose Show interview with Tom Hanks, Wilson: The Life and Death of a Hollywood Extra featurette, The Island featurette, HBO First Look Documentary, Surviving as a Castaway Survivalists Documentary, Special Effects Vignettes, Concept Art Gallery, Storyboard-To-Film Comparison, Widescreen anamorphic format, Number of discs: 2

Castaway has a nice variety of special features. The making-of portion was interesting and not excessively self serving. I do have to laugh at how the movie crews found filming in Fiji so traumatic. Give me some of that pain.

The Good: Tom Hanks is great in this movie. He is the movie for a good 2 hours of Castaway. While I was very apprehensive about watching a one-man show, I was pleasantly surprised.

Some critics had a problem with Tom’s return to the world in the second part of the movie. I liked the difficulties that Tom faced in this portion of the film. The very end is total Hollywood and that sucks. Sometimes you don’t need to feed me a happy ending.

The Bad: This movie has a few slow parts and it is long. Any movie that is more than three hours long is a serious entertainment commitment. I had avoided it in the theaters due to the length and some people will avoid it on DVD.

Bottom Line: Not a bad way to spend three hours.

Rating: Three Coconut Cocktails.
